Reading for Pleasure: Responsibility and Rigour

Teresa Cremin, (Open University)

It is widely recognised that children who read for pleasure improve their life chances, not just academically, but also in relation to wellbeing and relationships. So, this evidence-informed webinar, drawing on research into reading for pleasure will highlight the need to nurture the habit of reading in childhood, offer practical ways forward to support the development of readers who not only can, but do choose to read and find enjoyment in the process. Teresa will highlight the rigour and responsibility needed and will explore the benefits and challenges of reading for pleasure, ways to develop richer repertoires of children’s literature and other texts , strategies for getting to know your children as readers and an effective RfP pedagogy. The session will link to the OU's RfP website https://www.researchrichpedagogies.org/research/reading-for-pleasure

Please will all delegates bring a brilliant children's book they know and love.

How Reading Connects

Kelly Ashley @kashleyenglish (author of Word Power, Amplifying vocabulary instruction) will share ideas for nurturing children’s reading preferences - opening avenues to connect reading opportunities, personal interests and the wider world. The importance of teachers’ knowledge of texts will also be investigated. Kelly will also share examples of how teachers across Yorkshire have been strengthening their knowledge of RfP pedagogy as part of the OU/UKLA Yorkshire Teachers’ Reading Group.
